Here are the final details and instructions for the upcoming Compute Ontario Summer School at University of Waterloo. The classes will start on each day at 9:00am sharp, registration desk will be available starting at 8:30am in the hallway outside the lab MC-3027.

Please let us know if you do NOT plan to attend some sessions, or the whole event, as we still have people on the waiting lists.

Check the school's program (where course materials (slides and hands-on exercises) will be posted during or after the school: https://www.sharcnet.ca/events/ss2017/?page=prog_west&site=west

We recommend bringing your laptop to the school, as most courses have a significant hands-on component. Both eduroam and UW wifi are available. The labs have AC power outlets, so bring the charger for your laptop. The Mac Labs are well equipped, we have temporary accounts for you if you prefer to use the computer in the lab.

For hands on exercises, if you are using your laptop, you will need the following software installed: an ssh client, an sftp (or scp) client, and an X window client. If your laptop runs Windows, please install a free program MobaxTerm Home Edition (http://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/download-home-edition.html) as it has all the clients you need (and many more) in a single program. Mac laptops have ssh and scp clients, but some may not have X Window client, so you will have to install a free program XQuartz (https://www.xquartz.org/) to get that capability. Linux terminals have everything you need. Please make sure you have tested the software installed on your laptop before the school. The teaching staff might not be able to help you with your software installation and testing. The lab computers have those packages installed already.

For those who come to the 'Big Data' session, the Instructor recommends to have TigerVNC installed on your laptop, it can be downloaded from https://bintray.com/tigervnc/stable/tigervnc/1.8.0 .

Coffee/Water, light snacks will be served during the coffee break time in the registration desk area. Please note that No Foods and Drinks are allowed in the Labs.

The school's schedule for every day is as follows:

  • 09:00am: the morning session starts
  • 10:20am: coffee break
  • 12:00pm: lunch break (buy or bring your own lunch)
  • 01:30pm: the afternoon session starts
  • 02:50pm: coffee break
  • 04:30pm: the afternoon session ends

The location for the week long school is on the 3rd floor of Mathematics and Computing building (MC), Labs MC-3003 3027 or 3005.
